Victoria - Public Hospitals Policy and Funding Guidelines 1997-1998
Section A: Policy
2.8 Best Practice
Many hospitals are participating either in local or national initiatives to research and encourage 'Best Practice'. The Department sees this as an important development in improving patient care. As an incentive to directly foster these elements of best practice a limited amount of funds ($0.75 million) will continue to be allocated. The aim is to encourage hospitals and provide models for other hospitals to meet standards beyond the current industry standards.
Best practice projects will relate to activity where clinical and financial factors result in marked variability in hospital practice; where international standards are different from local standards; and/or where there is clear possibility of cost effective improvement, either in international literature or local case studies. Projects commenced in 1996-97 included an assessment of outcomes for medical and surgical management of miscarriage; a review of radiotherapy services in Victoria; and research on increasing the number of organ donors. Hospitals and researchers may apply with details of new projects by 30 August 1997.
