Greener government buildings program

The Greener government buildings program is a Premier’s Sustainability Award winning program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency across Victorian Government facilities. As part of the program, all Victorian Government departments are required to meet the following targets:

  • by 30 June 2012, departments must have committed to implement an energy performance contract or equivalent processes at sites accounting for at least 20 per cent of their total energy consumption
  • by 30 June 2018, departments must have committed to implement an energy performance contract or equivalent processes at sites accounting for at least 90 per cent of their total energy consumption.

The Department of Human Services is implementing the program by tendering for energy and water efficiency improvement to 14 high-rise public housing buildings. These buildings are equivalent to 20 per cent of the department’s monitored energy consumption.

To meet the 2018 program target, the department is planning to extend the program to the remaining high-rise public housing buildings, disability and youth justice facilities and office buildings.

More information about the program can be found by searching for 'Greener Government Buildings' on the Department of Treasury and Finance website.
