Kinship Care Program Model June 2009

This paper describes the new kinship program model for Victoria which was launched by Paul McDonald, Executive Director, of Children, Youth and Families at the Kinship Forum at Moonee Ponds on 25 June 2009.

This kinship program model promotes family decision-making processes especially family meetings and family care teams, supplements and builds on existing potential informal and mainstream community resources, integrates some new components with existing elements - some in community services organisations (CSOs) and some in Child Protection, and establishes some new CSO based kinship services. Service delivery is based on sub-regional 'catchment' areas and provides a continuum of less to more intensive service responses designed to promote self-managing kinship families whilst still ensuring the most vulnerable children and families are effectively monitored and supported.

The Hon Lisa Neville, Minister for Community Services has endorsed this new kinship program model and approved a staged implementation process commencing in 2009/10.
