The Department of Human Services and the Department of Health are seeking enthusiastic Aboriginal people looking for exciting career opportunities in the department.

We are looking for Aboriginal people who:

  • Are interested in working for either department
  • work well with others
  • have good communication skills
  • are good at solving problems
  • have a willingness to learn.

Prior experience or qualifications are not required. Anyone from school leavers (must be 18+ years of age when commencing employment) to the mature aged are encouraged to apply.

The aim of this program is to offer Aboriginal people a pathway to employment via entry level positions with the minimum desired or mandatory qualification.

What does the program offer?

The Aboriginal Study to Work Program (AStW) offers Aboriginal people an opportunity to complete a nationally recognised qualification at the Certificate IV or Diploma level whilst working over a 12 to 24 month period.

Once a student has successfully completed the Certificate IV or Diploma qualification and meets the employment criteria, the department will offer the recruit a position in a service area relevant to that qualification.

NOTE: At the end of the AStW Program, Disability Development Support Officers will have employment opportunities discussed with them to identify a position that meets their requirements for working location and working hours. This may involve casual opportunities, or fixed term positions, depending on availability of suitable positions. Appointments to ongoing positions must occur in accordance with the Disability Services Enterprise Agreement.

While studying, students will:

  • Mentored by the Aboriginal Employment Unit
  • Participate in learning and development opportunities
  • Be part of a departmental Aboriginal Staff Support Network
  • Be paid a entry level salary relevant to program they are employed in
