Glamorous Debutantes
A debutante ball for young people in out of home care...
For some of the 36 young people who danced the night away at a debutante ball at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 21 May, it was the 'best night of their life'.
The alcohol free event, as requested by the young people, witnessed young men resplendent in suits and ties proudly partnering young women wearing beautiful white gowns, sparkling jewellery and glamorous hairstyles. Many of them were nervous. They were also excited and very proud.
Watching the debutantes walk towards the Federal Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Minister Jenny Macklin MP; the supportive audience of 600 was inspired by the achievement of these young people. In particular, those who work in the sector and tirelessly support vulnerable young people to reach their potential.
Most of these young people currently live in out-of-home care, including foster care or residential care; while some who are over 18 years of age have left care and now reside independently.
For twelve weeks, every Wednesday evening they travelled to St Brigid's Hall in Fitzroy where dance teacher Barbara Dunne taught them how to 'step-it-out'. There, they showed great commitment and dedication, and experienced what it is like to be part of a team.
Supporting the young people were many agency staff who transported them to and from dance lessons, and who also assisted them in their selection of outfits for the evening. Underpinning the success of the event was a team of planners from the Office of the Child Safety Commissioner, agencies delivering out-of-home care services, the CREATE Foundation and the Centre for Excellence.
This was the second debutante ball, following the great success of the inaugural ball held in October 2007.
