A new $30 million affordable housing development built on top of Melbourne's heritage-listed Drill Hall building has brought this Art Deco landmark back to life.

Minister for Housing, Children and Early Childhood Development, Wendy Lovell paid tribute to all the parties who made this development a reality at the official opening on 14 December 2011.

Minister Lovell said that Drill Hall stands as a great example of what can happen when government joins with the affordable housing and philanthropic sector to address housing need. She made special mention of the City of Melbourne for signing over the land to the housing association, Housing Choices Australia and to The Myer Foundation for donating $2 million towards the development.

Minister Lovell joined Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Cr Robert Doyle and Senator Gavin Marshall on a tour of the new 59 unit development.  The Minister met tenants and viewed the refurbished Drill Hall which will soon become a community hub managed by the City of Melbourne.

Housing Choice Australia won the Leading Housing Solution award for Drill Hall at the Australasian Professional Excellence in Housing Awards ceremony in October this year.
