Minister for Youth Affairs, Ryan Smith recently announced that 21-year-old Frankston student Stephanie Raike has been chosen as the 2012 Victorian National Youth Week Young Member.

‘Ms Raike will represent Victoria on the National Youth Week National Planning Group, which shapes Australia’s premier youth event’, Mr Smith said.

‘Ms Raike will draw upon her experience as a volunteer with the Salvation Army’s Youth Street Teams as well as her part-time position as an L-2-P coordinator, which provides opportunities for disadvantaged young people to obtain their probationary driver licence.

'Ms Raike brings to the role a passion that young people, of all social backgrounds, participate in their local community. She is a great model for other young people seeking to learn new skills through study mentoring and volunteer work’, he said.

As a member of organisations such as the Oaktree Foundation, Youth Advisory Council of Victoria (YACVic) and Amnesty International, Ms Raike said it was important for young people to inspire each other in making the world a better place.

‘We all have a role to play whether it’s being a netball coach, volunteering with the Salvation Army or being informed about issues impacting young people and then doing something to make a difference’, Ms Raike said.

The Victorian Government provided $165,000 to help young Victorians participate in National Youth Week. Held in April, it is Australia’s biggest youth event showcasing the contributions and talents of young people and providing an opportunity for their voices to be heard in the wider community.
