Making the Connection Manual

Language Services

Victoria is renowned for its ethnic diversity. Victorians speak over 180 languages and dialects, enriching our community with a range of customs and cultures. Languages such as Greek, Arabic and Italian are familiar, while others are less well known, such as the Dinka and Oromo languages from Africa.

Today, one in five Victorians speak a language other than English at home, making access to language services (interpreting and translating) increasingly important, as effective communication is essential to the delivery of all human services.

This workbook has been designed as a study aid to accompany the multimedia resource. The resource consists of a series of dramatised scenes that present an insight into how to best work with interpreters in a variety of work situations.

This workbook encourages discussion of the main points raised in each scene. It can be used in either a self-paced or facilitated learning environment.
