Department of Health and Human Services Environment Policy 2016

The Department of Health and Human Services takes a broad view of the drivers of good health, the causes of ill health, the social and economic context in which people live, and of the incidence and experience of vulnerability. The department recognises the link between the health and wellbeing of the environment and the health and wellbeing of Victorians, in particular that disadvantaged and vulnerable groups are more likely to be affected by the negative effects of climate change. The department is committed to the protection of the environment and adopting a pollution prevention approach to all activities to support and enhance the wellbeing of all Victorians.

In order to achieve our environmental goals we commit to:

  • maintain an Environmental Management System (EMS) to identify and manage significant environmental aspects and associated impacts, providing a framework for setting and achieving environmental objectives. The EMS will undergo continual improvement to enhance environmental performance.
  • measure, monitor, review and report on environmental performance as defined by our EMS and compliance obligations
  • actively engage staff in shaping the nature and scope of EMS initiatives to maximise the success of programs and embed leading environmental performance across our organisation
  • implement programs to ensure all personnel are aware of their role and responsibility in fulfilling and sustaining this policy
  • work with our service providers, interested parties and stakeholders to investigate and implement environmental management programs
  • provide support and advice to our service providers to assist them and the broader community to adapt
  • incorporate comprehensive environmental sustainability principles in new capital works programs
  • minimise the adverse environmental impacts of activities by improving the efficiency of resource consumption and the selection and use of appropriate materials, processes, equipment and services
  • meet or exceed the requirements of relevant Commonwealth and Victorian Government environmental policy, practices, regulations and legislation
  • contribute to the achievement of Victorian Government environmental objectives and demonstrate commitment to leading by example.

This policy is applicable to all operations of the department at all locations and is communicated to all employees, contractors and other stakeholders as well as the general public.
