Our Regions

During 2008'09 delivery of our services was coordinated through eight regions, where 77 per cent of our departmental staff are located. Regions are responsible for:

  • managing the range of human services provided in their region, including directly delivered services such as child protection, youth justice, disability, and public housing accommodation and support
  • developing and maintaining effective partnerships with local government, non-government organisations and the community
  • providing a range of emergency management activities, including overall recovery coordination, and specific response and recovery services to local communities.

Barwon-South Western

The region covers 29,637 sq kms extending from Queenscliffe in the east to the South Australian border in the south west. Services are provided to an estimated residential population of 365,696 representing 7 per cent of Victoria's population.

The region's 2008-09 budget was $305.3 million (including small rural hospital budgets) which provided services to the community through 85 agreements with community service organisations and directly by regional staff.

  • regional offices in Colac, Geelong, Hamilton, Portland and Warrnambool

Eastern Metropolitan

The region covers 2,960 sq kms extending from inner suburbs such as Kew, to semi rural areas such as Healesville. Services are provided to an estimated residential population of 1,013,694 representing 19 per cent of Victoria's population.

The region's 2008-09 budget was $467.6 million, which provided services to the community through 155 agreements with community service organisations, local government and directly by regional staff.

  • statewide after hours services including Emergency Services Child Protection, Streetwork Outreach Service and Assessment Bail Placement Services

Gippsland

The region covers 41,538 sq kms extending from the fringe of metropolitan Melbourne to the New South Wales border and is bounded by an extensive coastline. Services are provided to an estimated residential population of 255,381 representing 5 per cent of Victoria's population.

The region's 2008-09 budget was $226.2 million (including small rural hospital budgets) which provided services to the community through 196 agreements with community service organisations and directly by regional staff.

Grampians

The region covers 48,610 sq kms extending from Bacchus Marsh in the east to the South Australian border in the west. Services are provided to an estimated residential population of 220,160 representing 4 per cent of Victoria's population.

The region's 2008-09 budget was $261.9 million (including small rural hospital budgets) which provided services to the community through 77 agreements with community service organisations and directly by regional staff.

Hume

The region covers 40,427 sq kms in rural, north east Victoria extending from Beveridge, just outside Melbourne, to the Murray River in the north, and from the Alps, almost to Bendigo. Services are provided to an estimated residential population of 266,930 representing 5 per cent of Victoria's population.

The region's 2008-09 budget was $286.3 million (including small rural hospital budgets) which provided services to the community through 123 agreements with community service organisations and directly by regional staff.

Loddon Mallee

The region covers 58,965 sq kms extending from the Murray River in the north to the northern suburbs of Melbourne and across to the South Australian border to the west. Services are provided to an estimated residential population of 311,855 representing 6 per cent of Victoria's population.

The region's 2008-09 budget was $312.1 million (including small rural hospital budgets) which provided services to the community through 78 agreements with community service organisations and directly by regional staff.

  • 26 disability residential facilities across the region.

North and West Metropolitan

The region covers 2,981 sq kms extending from Werribee to Eltham. The region includes the Melbourne CBD andextends out to Werribee, Melton, Sunbury, Whittlesea and Kinglake. Services are provided to an estimated residential population of 1,606,749 representing 30 per cent of Victoria's population.

The region's 2008-09 budget was $781.4 million which provided services to the community through 235 agreements with community service organisations and directly by regional staff.

2,432 regional employees deliver services from:

  • regional offi ces in Fitzroy, Glenroy, Preston and Footscray
  • housing services are also delivered from Ascot Vale, Carlton, Footscray, Fitzroy, Sunshine, Richmond Broadmeadows, Collingwood and North Melbourne to more than 35 per cent of Victoria's public and community housing dwellings
  • Plenty Residential Services, Disability Forensic Assessment and Treatment Service, and Secure Welfare Services
  • 176 disability residential facilities across the region.

Southern Metropolitan

The region covers 2,886 sq kms extending from inner urban suburbs such as Port Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula and eastward through to Pakenham. Services are provided to an estimated residential population of 1,272,588 representing 24 per cent of Victoria's population.

The region's 2008-09 budget was $495 million which provided services to the community through 445 agreements with community service organisations and directly by regional staff.

1,154 regional employees deliver services from:

  • regional offi ces in Dandenong, Cheltenham and Frankston
  • housing services are also delivered from Prahran and South Melbourne
  • a CBD site for the delivery of statewide Family Records and Intercountry Services
  • 70 disability residential facilities across the region.
